BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 1st Day

Women
World Champion Lisa Ashton started the defence of her title with an easy first round win over Paula Jacklin. She threw two 180s in the match and averaged 83.67. In the quarterfinals she could meet nine times World Champion Trina Gulliver.

The biggest upset of the first day caused in the second women's match Dutch debutant Anca Zijlstra, who survived a lot of matchdarts of Anastasia Dobromyslova and won in the end 2:1. Dobromyslova was quite uncharacteristically unsure on her doubles, which in the deciding leg of the third set led to disaster. Both players showed nerves in this leg, but it was Zijlstra who finally hit the double 1 for the win.

Men
There were some smaller upsets in the men's tournament as well. So in the first match young Welshman Williams, the number 12 seed, eliminated the three times Lakeside finalist Tony O'Shea from the tournament. The first set was rather scrappy from both players; Williams won it with a 66 Finish. The second set was evenly matched but again it was Williams who hold his nerve in the deciding fifth leg and got the 2:0. In the third set the Welshman had settled and confidently managed the 3:0 win.

New Zealand's Craig Caldwell won the preliminary round match against Alan Soutar and will play in the first round reigning champion Scott Mitchell. Soutar had won the first hard fought set, but in the following three sets the debutant from New Zealand dominated the match and he won 3:1.

The next upset followed in the match between Darryl Fitton and Denis Harbour - Fitton, the number 7 seed, lost 2:3 to Harbour, one of the reason's might have been Harbour's slow throw. The match had to be decided in a sudden death leg of the fifth set as Harbour always managed to get back into the match. Fitton had missed several chances to win. Harbour for the only second time reached the second round of the tournament where he'll play either Martin Phillips or David Cameron or Ted Hankey.

In a thrilling preliminary round match American Larry Butler, who stood in October in the final of the Winmau World Masters, won 3:2 against James Hurrell. He will now play in the first round against young Dutchman Ryan de Vreede. Butler won the first two sets, but Hurrell could draw impressively after the interval. The deciding set Butler dominated again and he won it 3:1. It was the first win for Butler on the Lakeside stage.

Canadian Jeff Smith, who reached the World Championship semi-finals last year, won his preliminary round match against Dutchman Matthew Medhurst 3:0 and will play against Martin Adams in the first round. Smith dominated the match and only lost to legs to Medhurst.

In the last match of the evening the BDO number 1 Glen Durrant stood at the oche. He defeated young Dean Reynolds 3:0, despite the young Welshman showing a good performance in his Lakeside debut. Durrant, who beside other tournaments won the World Masters and the finders Masters 2015, was impressive but was pushed all the way by Reynolds - the first two sets all went into the deciding fifth leg. In the last set the resistance of the Welshman lessened and Durrant could win it 3:0.
After the match Reynolds said: "Dean Reynolds is a fantastic player. That young boy will go on to big things, and I'm over the moon to get past him today. I was very nervous tonight, maybe that's something I need to work on. I never ever felt 100 percent, but I'm just so happy to get through. I feel like I can kick on from now."
