BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 3. Day

Women
On the third day of the BDO World Championship only one Women's match was played. Aileen de Graaf played against Casey Gallagher. Gallagher till a few years ago was a very successful youth player but till now couldn't keep up among the grown-ups. That again showed in this match - Gallagher had no chance against a solid playing de Graaf and lost 0:2. De Graaf not really played her best game - but she showed in the best leg of the match, a 13-Darter - what she is capable to. De Graaf who to be sure is one of the favourites to win the title will meet in the quarterfinals he fellow country women Anca Zijlstra who eliminated Anastasia Dobromyslova from the tournament.

Men
On the third day the last preliminary round match and five first round matches of the men were played.
In the last preliminary round match former BDO Champion and Australian debutant Rob Modra stood at the oche. The Australian number 1 had not really a chance against Walton and could only win three legs. Walton showed the best performance of the day with an average just above 90. The first two sets were clearly dominated by Walton, who only had some problems after Modra had won in the second set his first leg in a 13-Darter. But the Australian failed to use his chance to draw 1:1. In the third set Modra didn't score as well and Walton won the match with a 114 Finish.
After this quite good start of the afternoon followed an exciting and close Dutch duel between Jeffrey de Graaf and Richard Veenstra, which Veenstra surprisingly won in the tiebreak. Though the averages were not at top level the performances of the two players with an 89.46 by Veenstra and 87.72 by de Graaf were quite attractive. The players threw 10 q80s in the match. De Graff had entered the tournament as the number 3 seed, but once again as in his three World Championship appearances before couldn't win.
Veenstra had the better start into the match but it was de Graaf who after a 134 finish managed to win the first set in the fifth leg. Veenstra got the 1:1 with a 158 checkout and forced inspired by this a deciding leg in the third set which he won. In the fourth set de Graaf dominated but Veenstra didn't give in and after Veenstra's 11-Darter another deciding lag was necessary which this time de Graaf won as Veenstra was unable to keep his nerve. The fifth set was very close but it was Veenstra who managed to win two successive legs in the tie break und he sealed his win with a 96 Finish.
In the following match between Pip Blackwell and Martin Atkins it again was the seeded player who was eliminated from the tournament. Blackwell never was really in the match and showed a disappointing performance while Atkins hat to struggle during the first legs but then recovered and played a solid match. Beside Blackwell experienced some double trouble. Atkins was a deserved 3:0 winner and progressed into the second round.

The evening session started with the second tie break game between American Larry Butler and young Dutchman Ryan de Vreede who played on the PDC Tour for some time as well. It was an average match, which not really was gripping as the two players threw in between really good darts too many scrappy darts and missed too many doubles. The first two sets all ended in a deciding fifth leg - set 1 went to the American with a 125 checkout, Set 2 to de Vreede with a 61 finish. The third leg again was won by Butler. The fourth set again ended in a deciding fifth leg. Both players had their chances to win it. In the end the Dutchman won it for the 2:2. De Vreede began the fifth set with a 13-darter but missed his double in the second leg and Butler took his chance. The American won leg 3 as well but then missed with his first Matchdart in leg four and de Vreede won the lag. In the following two legs de Vreede had his chances as well but Butler kept his nerves and won them both. In the second round he will play against Glen Durrant - a repeat of the Winmau World Masters final last October.
The other two first round matches of the night both were hallmarked by the missing form of the players. Ross Montgomery played rather weak against a not really in form Jamie Hughes and lost 0:3. Both players had a lot of double trouble throughout the match which Hughes at least could compensate in parts with his scoring.
Even weaker were in the last match the performances of Martin Phillips and Ted Hankey. Hankey had an average of 71.31, Phillips one of 76.08.Beside Hankey missed with one exception all his doubles. So in the end Phillips had a comfortable 3:0 win, but to be sure both he and Ted Hankey will try to forget the match as soon as possible.
