BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 4. Day

Women
On the fourth day of the BDO World Championships again two women's matches were played.
In the afternoon Deta Hedman met Australian Corrine Hammond. Hammond had more problems to settle in the match then Hedman, who is quite experienced on the Lakeside stage. But she fought and forced a deciding leg in the first set which she even dominated. But she couldn't hit her double and Hedman won the first set with a 148 Finish. The double trouble didn't stop for the Australian in set two despite her good scoring and Hedman took her chances to win the second set as well.
New Zealand's Tina Osborne was as as big challenge for Zoe Jones in the evening. This time it was England's Jones who experienced the double trouble. But she somehow managed to win the first set. Set 2 went to Osborne. In the third set Jones was more convincing and she won set and match. In the quarterfinals she will play against Ann-Louise Peters who eliminated Anastasia Dobromyslova from the tournament.

Men
The first match of the afternoon ended with the thus far biggest upset of the tournament - Canadian Jeff Smith won 3:0 against Martin Adams the number 2 seed. It was quite a good match from both players but Adams, one of the favourites to win this year, only won three legs in the contest. Most of the match Adams scored quite well but he had some weaker phases which the Canadian used to his advantage and Adams experienced some double trouble as well. With each leg he won Smith got more confident and for Adams it was more and more difficult to keep up though he impressed with a 10 dart leg.
After the match Smith said: 2I#ve just won on the Lakeside stage against Martin Adams and I still shake as a leaf. I know that when I hit my double I can win against every player around the world.
Adams said:" "He was the better player. You can't argue that. The first set could have been different would I have hit my doubles but that's darts. When he goes on playing like this the other players have to play their best darts the darts of their life to beat him. Jeff was superb today."

The second match was a dream debut for Mark McGeeney who beat under par playing Peter Sajwani 3:0. Sajwani who averaged just 74 only won two legs. McGeeney and Sajwani had problems with their scoring at the beginning of the match despite their impressive finishing. Sajwani won the first leg with a 92 finish. McGeeney draw 1:1 with a 122 Bullseye Checkout which settled his nerves. Without a problem he won the first set while the Swede still struggled and finally won a second leg in the third set. But it was too late - he couldn't stop McGeeney who will now meet in the quarterfinals his pair's partner and reigning champion Scott Mitchell.
McGeeney admitted after the match: "Never before I've been so nervous in my life. I trembled like a leaf throughout the match. I only thought not to let myself impress by Sajwani's stage presence just concentrate on my darts and do what I have to do."

The evening session started with another surprise - Madars Razma defeated Gary Robson 3:0 and impressed in a quite weak match with his clinical finishing. The first set was a hard fought one and ended in a deciding fifth leg which Razma won in 16 darts. In the second leg Robson had even more to fight with his scoring and Raszma enlarged his lead after a 177 with a double 18. In the third set Robson looked more settled and he managed to win it. But Robsons's high was soon over and Razma once again used his clinical finishing and won the match with a 150 Finish.

In the second match Geert de Vos had now problems to win against Greek qualifier Kostas Pantelidis. De Vos didn't show a great performance but had the match under control. It took till the second set before Pantelidis had his first dart on a double but he missed and de Vos had a 2:0 lead entering the interval. After the interval Vos had lost his concentration while the Greek looked stronger and managed to win the third set. But de Vos recovered in set 4 and won set and match.

The match between Wesley Harms and Japanese Segio Asada developed into a five set thriller in which in the end the Dutchman prevailed. Harms experienced some double trouble throughout the match while in other parts his finishing was brilliant. Asada punished him several times. The first set Harms could win, in the second set Asada used Harm's double trouble and managed to draw. In the third set Asada shared Harms double trouble and The Dutchman won the set but again the Japanese reacted strong and drew with a 122 finish on the bullseye. It looked in the deciding fifth set Asada felt the pressure more than Harms who had the throw. With a double 10 Harms crossed the finishing line.

In the last match of the evening Brian Dawson won in the tiebreak against John Walton. Dawson survived two matchdarts from Walton and had to comeback from 0:2 down. Walton won the first set with a 116er Finish and showed a strong performance in the second set as well. Dawson returned determined from the interval and found a way back into the match. He won the third set without losing a keg. In the fourth set Walton was back and even had two matchdarts in the fourth leg but missed. Dawson managed the 2:2 and kept his nerves in the deciding set as well to win the tiebreak.
