Winmau World Masters - Day 2

On the second day of the World Masters the youth finals and the last 32 of the men took place where the seeded players played against the last 16 of the play-offs. It was a very long day of darts with some upsets!

Already the girls final ended with a surprise as not Beau Greaves the favourite but Russian Veronika Korolova won the title. The 12 year old Greaves had an outstanding year but here in the final it was Korolova who showed a great performance and won deservedly 4:4.
In the boys final it was more business as usual as the Dutch favourite Justin van Tergouw defended his title with a 4:1 win over the quite good playing English talent Owen Maiden.

Than the last 32 of the men started and reigning champion Glen Durrant stood against Robert Attard from Malta at the oche. Durrant didn't perform great but it was enough to beat Attard 3:0. In the second match it was the seeded Martin Philipps who was eliminated - he was not good enough to keep up with a strong playing Belgian Davy van Baelen. In the third match it was the seeded players as well who had a bad start but Wesley Harms showed a great comeback and won in the end 3:2 against Australian Raymond Smith. No problems at all had Darius Labanauskas with Welshman Steve Alker who was miles away from his form in the play-offs. An easy win for the seeded player.
Less lucky was Martin Adams in the next match and he lost to the unknown Irish player John O'Shea 2:3. In the following match my favourite to win had been Canadian Jeff Smith but seeded Brian Dawson prevailed in the end 3:2. A rather close match between Jim Williams and German Robert Allenstein followed. Allenstein had managed to win the first set, Williams levelled but Allenstein regained the lead again. Williams looked like he finally came to live and levelled again before he won the first leg of the deciding match and for the first time got the lead. In the second leg his match darts missed and Allenstein levelled. In the last leg of the match Williams had the throw and he used his advantage to seal the win. After that Jamie Hughes had little to none problems with Gary Robson and won 3:1.

In the next match followed the next upset and a quite good Danny Noppert lost a close match against unknown Canadian Kiley Edmunds. And with Richard Veenstra another seeded player was eliminated in the following match by Alan Soutar. Next on the agenda was a thriller between Mark McGeeney - the seeded player - and James Hurrell which in the end McGeeney won by sheer force of will. James Hurrell played with 94.44 the highest average of the day and Mark McGeeney threw as Danny Noppert five 180s. The last matches of the day were not thrilling at all and very one-sided. Four 3:0 wins for the seeded players Scott Waites, Darryl Fitton, Geert de Vos and Scott Mitchell who all progressed into the next round.
