Andy Fordham is one of the British legends of darts. 1994 - 2009 he played for the BDO and four times stood in the BDO World Championship finale in Lakeside. In 2004 he won the World Champion title defeating Mervyn King in the finale. 1999 he was Winmau World Master.
In the years after 2004 he three more times took part in the BDO World Championship but couldn't win a single match. Because of his enormous consumption of alcohol he had serious health problems, he had too much weight and the heat on stage because of the spots made him unwell. So in 2007 he couldnīt even play his first round match but was rushed to hospital.
He had water in his lungs and his liver almost didnīt work any longer. A short while later he suffered a breakdown at home and had to go back to hospital. The doctors told him he had immediately stop to drink alcohol and lose weight. He follwed the advice and his liver recovered - a planned liver transplantation was not necessary.
In September 2007 he returned but couldnīt find his old form. In January 2009 he switched to the PDC.
In his youth Fordham was an enthusiastic athlete and he played soccer as well.
