There are still those who are unable to grasp the concept of a points-per-dart (ppd) average. Simply put, it's all points scored, divided by all
darts thrown. It doesn't matter whether a player wins or loses a leg or a match, and it doesn't matter who throws first or second, the formula is
always the same.
Rather than a ppd, the PDC uses a points-per-turn average. Nothing to worry about though, as that is simply the ppd multiplied by three - the
amount of darts in a turn. Putting that into actual figures, a 14-dart leg gives a ppd average of 35.79. Multiply that by three, and you get a
points-per-turn average of 107.36.
Although championships are - and should be - decided by actual results, these averages are the most realistic method of judging a players'
performance and/or Form, be it one-off match average, or a season long average. They are equivalent of a bowling average, or a batting average
in baseball.
Most of us are aware of the fact that Phil Taylor is the greatest player of all time, an opinion that is supported by things like fifteen World
Championships, of two perfect games in one match. As impressive as these achievements are, it is nothing compared to the simple averages behind
Phil's performances. Fortunately, there are people who keep track of these statistics!
As of last Thursday, there have been a total of 150 averages of 105 points-per-turn (35 ppd) that have been recorded in televised matches.
Ironically enough it was Phil himself who posted # 150.
Of these, 91 (yes, ninety-one) have been recorded by Phil Taylor. That means that the rest of the darting fraternity has succeeded in recording
just 59 such averages in television history. Put another way, one man has posted some 61 percent of the top 150 averages, including 19 of the top
21! Here is a breakdown by Player:
92 | Phil Taylor |
12 | Raymond van Barneveld |
10 | Gary Anderson |
8 | James Wade |
4 | Adrian Lewis, Martin Adams |
3 | Simon Whitlock, Darryl Fitton |
2 | Colin Lloyd, Michael van Gerwen |
11 others have recorded a 105+ average on TV on one occasion.
I don't have the space to list all 150 averages here, so I will post only those of 109 or greater. This list comprises a total of thirty-seven
match averages, 27 (73 percent) of which are Phil's. What is interesting is that of these other 10 109+ averages no other name appears more than
once!
In other words, a total of eleven players have recorded a televised match average in excess of 109. Phil Taylor is the only player who has achieved
this more then once, and he has done so on twenty-seven separate occasions!
We all know that it is easier - for everyone - to record a high average over a short-format match, so let's look what happens when we remove those
averages that were recorded in matches of ten legs of fewer. That leaves twenty-six averages of 109+, and only two players - Chris Mason and Mark
Webster - sty on the list alongside Phil Taylor.
I don't have space to post all 105+ averages, but here are the top 37 televised averages of all time (109+), with opponents, legs played, and when
it was achieved.
