Lakeside Play-Offs 2016

As every year before the Winmau World Masters begin the Play Offs for the BDO World Championship take place and for the second time the BDO Youth World Championship was played down to the final as well.
This year the BDO made some changes relating the dates and the venues for the World Masters and the Lakeside Play-Offs till it finally settled for end November/begin of December and the Lakeside Country club in Frimley Green where the BDO world championship takes place as well.

As always most of the participants in the World Masters arrived in time to take part in the Play-Offs as well. There were still four places in the men's world championship and two in the women's World Championship on offer. All in all players from more than 40 countries stood at the oche including players from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The best German participant was Daniel Zygla who reached the last 32 beside players like Andy Fordham and Ted Hankey. Even better than Zygla was Swiss Thomas Junghans who stood in the semi-finals of the World Masters last year. It looks he is in good form again as he played himself into the quarterfinals where he lost against Dutchman Willem Mandigers. I suppose he's still annoyed to have missed to take part in the World Championship by just one match. Qualified for the World championship are beside Dutchman Mandigers Englishman Paul Hogan, Belgian Davy van Baelen and Mark McGrath from New Zealand.

None of the German speaking women reached the later round of the tournament. Only Steffi Lüeck lost in the last 32. The World Championship places went to two not really well-known players - to Olive Byamukama and the experienced Canadian Patricia Farrell.

No upsets brought the Youth World championship in which both boys and girls too parts though it were by far more boys and none of the girls came from a German speaking country. German Denis-Mateo Wunsch reached the last 32 but all in all the Dutch players dominated the last few rounds. Three of the semifinalists came from the Netherlands and it was in this situation a surprise only Justin van Tergouw - World Masters winner 2015 and WDF Youth Europe Cup winner 2016 - will play in the final. His opponent will be 14 year old Scotsman Nathan Girvan. Nathan Girvan comes from the Angus Youth Academy and heads the Scottish youth ranking after he won 18 tournaments this year.
The final of the Youth World Championship will take place in the afternoon-session of the BDO World Championship on 12. January and will be televised.
