The Welshman Richie Burnett played in the BDO from 1994 to 1999.
In 1994 he won the World Masters and 1995 the BDO Embassy World Championship where he defeated Raymond van Barneveld in the final,
He was only the fourth player who managed to hold both titles at the same time. In 1996 Burnett was back in the World Championship final
but was beaten by Steve Beaton and in 1998 he again reached the final but this time got down to Raymond van Barneveld. When he returned
in 1999 he lost first round and after that decided to switch to the PDC.
He never played as successful in the PDC though he reached the final of the World Matchplay in
2001 and twice - 2002 and 2003 -
the quarterfinals of the PDC World Championship. He slided down the rankings more and more. In 2007 he
qualified through the qualifier
for the World Championship but lost first round to Aley Roy.
Burnett had lost his form, he had financial problems and he started do develop dartitis, but it started to look brighter in 2010. He qualified for
the PDC World Championship 2011 and the World Grand Prix and won a Pro Tour Event. Together with Mark Webster he reached 2012 and 2013 the semi-finals
of the PDC World Cup. 2014 he for the first time since 2005 he reached the third round of the PDC World Championship and had a quite good year after which he would have
entered the PDC World Championship 2015 as numer 26 seed. Instead he was banned for 18 months after a positive cocaine test.
In May 2016 he returned in the PDC Challenge Tour and regained his Tour Card in Qualifying School 2017, lost it again and again
played on the Challenge Tour. 2022 Burnett again took part in the PDc Qualifying School and got his Tour
Card back by the ranking. Burnett surprised everybody when he reached the quarterfinals of the UK Open in 2023.
