WORLD CHAMPION EXITS SPEEDY SERVICES UK OPEN AS TAYLOR & BARNEY BATTLE ON
World Champion Adrian Lewis was knocked out of the Speedy Services UK Open on Saturday afternoon by Wes Newton, but former winners Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld continued their challenge to regain the trophy in Bolton.
Lewis had powered past Kevin McDine on Friday night, but suffered a fourth round loss as Newton came from 6-5 down to take a 9-7 win from their clash.
Newton, the runner-up last year, now meets Belgian debutant Kim Huybrechts in Saturday night's last 16, and said: "I've played Adrian a few times and they're always good games, and this was no different.
"I produced a couple of good legs at the business end of the match and that proved the difference. Getting to the final last year gave me a lot of self-belief and hopefully I can have a good run again this weekend."
Huybrechts won through to the fifth round in his first UK Open appearance with a 9-7 win over Vincent van der Voort, sealing victory with a 111 checkout.
Two other Dutchmen, though, won through to the last 16, with Raymond van Barneveld seeing off Andy Hamilton 9-5 despite the World Championship finalist hitting a 170 finish, while Michael van Gerwen also landed a maximum checkout as he hit back from 3-0 down to defeat Mervyn King 9-7.
Van Gerwen will now play Terry Jenkins, who was a 9-3 winner against Dean Winstanley, while van Barneveld - the 2006 and 2007 champion - takes on Peter Wright, who hit back from 3-1 down to see off Richie Burnett 9-4.
Four-time UK Open champion Phil Taylor, meanwhile, brushed aside Colin Osborne 9-1 in their repeat of the 2009 final. Taylor had struggled to see off Roland Scholten on Friday night, but won the opening eight legs against Osborne before the Derby thrower put aside his double trouble to win the ninth, but it was not enough to save him from the round's heaviest defeat.
"I was a lot more comfortable on stage today but the scoreline probably didn't reflect the game," said Taylor. "Colin missed a few doubles and his head dropped a bit, but it's a good feeling for me to be in the last 16. "We're getting down to the serious stuff now and it's a great format which keeps you on edge - it's like the FA Cup and it's a great event."
Taylor now meets Ronnie Baxter, who was a 9-6 winner against Darren Webster on Saturday afternoon, while Australian star Simon Whitlock will take on Dave Chisnall. Whitlock was in fine form as he defeated Justin Pipe 9-5, winning five of the game's final six legs after the opening eight were shared, while Chisnall defeated Dennis Smith by the same scoreline.
Gary Anderson, who had hit a nine-darter on Friday night, was unable to repeat the form as he lost the all-Scottish battle with Robert Thornton 9-7. Thornton now plays Dennis Priestley after the two-time World Champion defeated Andy Smith 9-8 - after the Studley thrower hit back from 8-4 down to force a decider. Denis Ovens, a semi-finalist for the past two years, takes on Paul Nicholson in the last 16 after their respective wins over Brendan Dolan and Arron Monk, while Jamie Caven and Joe Cullen also clash on Saturday evening.
Caven was a 9-7 comeback winner against Mark Hylton, while Cullen took a 9-8 win over Colin Lloyd in their game as the Essex man failed to follow up his win over reigning champion James Wade on Friday night with another success.
The fifth round will be played on Saturday evening, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the 200,000 pound event following on Sunday.
