BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 2. Day

Women
On the second day of the BDO World Championships again two matches of the Women were played and as on the first day they brought the biggest upset of the day.
In the afternoon session number two seed Fallon Sherrock, who had played a great year 2015 and was one of the favourites for the title, met Dane Ann-Louise Peters and was eliminated in the Sudden Death leg. Sherrock had some problems in the match to hit her doubles and Peters used her chances. The first set in which Sherrock threw two 180, she lost in the deciding leg. In the second set Sherrock managed to draw. The first four legs of the third set were shared - a Sudden Death leg was necessary. Peters got the throw - and used the advantage to win.
The women's match of the evening session between Trina Gulliver and Dee Bateman ended in a Sudden Death leg as well. Gulliver had started the match strong and won the first set without losing a leg. But then she weakened and Bateman managed to draw. In the third set both players showed nerves. Bateman busted in the third leg but Gulliver didn't manage to take the chance. But she won the fourth leg to draw 2:2 and had the throw in the Sudden Death leg. As Peters Gulliver used this advantage to win the match. Should Gulliver get further in the tournament to be sure she has to improve - especially as her next opponent will be reigning champion Lisa Ashton.

Men
On the second day of the tournament four preliminary round matches were played and only two first round matches
The biggest surprise in the preliminary round matches of the afternoon was Ted Hankey's 3:0 win against David Cameron, the Canadian number 1. The match was dominated from the beginning by Hankey who impressed with his clinical finishing. Hankey will play in the first round against Martin Phillips
Beside Hankey Swede Peter Sajwani was the other preliminary round match winner of the afternoon - he defeated young Englishman Sam Hewson 3:2. Hewson only entered the World Championship after Vladimir Andersen had to withdraw as he was banned in his home country. Both players and the match had problems with their nerves. Sajwani won the first two sets and was over the whole match the more consistent player. Hewson showed in a strong third set what he really is capable off and managed to draw in an up-and-down fourth set. The fifth set was had fought and both players had a problem to keep their nerves. In the end Sajwani won with a conciliating 14 darter.
In the evening session first Greek Kostas Pantelidis and Englishman Darren Peetoum stood at the oche and he managed for the first time a Greece win on the Lakeside stage. Both players were debutants and it showed they had no experience playing on such a stage. It was an epic match and Pantelidis won it deservedly despite he missed eight matchdarts till he finally hit the winning double.
In the last preliminary round match Japanese Seigo Asada played against Lithuanian Darius Labanauskas. Labanauskas certainly entered the match as the favourite but it was Asada who won the solid preliminary round match 3:1. Labanauskas found no way against Asada's scoring power and didn't manage to take his chances when Asada's Matchdart missed. In the end Asada was a deserved winner with quite a good 92 average.

In the first first round match of day which opened the afternoon session reigning champion Scott Mitchell defeated New Zealand's Craig -Caldwell 3:2. The player from New Zealand had already impressed in his preliminary round match and pushed Mitchell to the limit. Caldwell won the first set and threw six perfect darts in it. In the second set Mitchell showed his class and managed to draw. In the third set Mitchell forced with a 161 Finish a deciding fifth leg which was won by Caldwell in a 13 darter in which Caldwell again threw six perfect darts. The fourth leg went into a deciding fifth leg again - this time Mitchell won it in 14 darts. Both players had their problems in the first leg of set five. It was Mitchell who settles first. Nevertheless again a fifth leg was needed which Mitchell won. Mitchell averaged around 92 and his hit ration on the doubles was 60 percent - probably the deciding factor.
The second first round match was the last match of the evening session and it was clearly dominated by Scott Wates who showed the till now best performance of the tournament. Dutchman Willem Mandigers just couldn't keep up and only won two legs in the match. Waites threw three high finishes and produced with 96 the till now highest average of the tournament. After this convincing performance to be sure Waites will be among the favourites to win the title.
