BDO World Championship - Report, Statistics 7. Day

Women
On the seventh day of the BDO World Championships in the women's tournament the semi-finals were played.
In the first semi-final Deta Hedman and Ann-Louise Peters stood at the oche. Peters, who till that match always won due to her clinical finishing, had no chance at all against a consistently playing Hedman who hit her doubles. She couldn't win a single leg and Deta Hedman convincingly won 2:0.

Trina Gulliver had in the second semi-final a far less easy match against Aileen de Graaf. But from the beginning Gulliver looked more confident then in her matches before and she showed a better performance as well. The first set ended in a deciding fifth leg, de Graaf missed two darts at her doubles and Gulliver won the set in 17 darts. In the second set de Graaf was a little bit better and managed to draw with a double 13. In the last set Gulliver was in complete command and Aileen de Graaf didn't win a single leg. Seemingly without any nerve Gulliver hit double 4 for the win.

Men
In the men's tournament on the seventh day the quarterfinals were played which again brought some upsets - number 1 seed Glen Durrant, who announced after the match he'll stay with the BDO, and reigning champion Scott Mitchell were eliminated from the tournament.

In the first quarterfinal Wesley Harms played against Jamie Hughes. For the first time in the tournament Hughes showed a really good performance and he dominated the match after he had lost the first two legs to Harms. He won the first set in the deciding fifth leg and was not to be stopped in set two. In the third leg another deciding leg was necessary - probably the weakest leg of Hughes in the whole match, which Harms managed to win. The fourth set which again was won by Hughes both players had a weaker phase. After the interval it was again Hughes who dominated the match and he won all three legs of the fifth set to the 4:1 lead. In the last set Harm had his chances but he couldn't hit his doubles and Hughes snatched set and match.

In the second quarterfinal number 1 seed Glen Durrant was only 1 leg short to win when Scott Waites started another comeback. But the leg had been a level match despite the score line at that time already only Durrant had managed to take his chances. When Durrant was 4:2 in the lead the match turned around and Waites won 9 of the last 11 legs of the match. Durrant has two wait twelve more months before he can try to win the title.

Jeff Smith reached with a 5:2 win over Dennis Harbour like last year the semi-finals. Harbour had already been in the lead with two sets and hadn't lost a single leg before Smith settled in the match. But then the match was under Smith's command who won 15 of the last 18 legs. Harbour played on solidly but Smith improved throughout the match and Harbour was not able to take his chances.

The last quarterfinal ended with an upset as well - Dutch debutant Richard Veenstra defeated reigning champion Scott Mitchell 5:3. Both players had their problems to settle in the first set and to hit their doubles. Veenstra won it in the fourth leg. The problems for Mitchell continued in the second set so Veenstra went with a 2:0 lead into the first interval. After the break Mitchell won his first set and it looked he had a chance in set four as well but in the third leg his double trouble returned and Veenstra won the set in a nervous fifths leg. In the fifth set Mitchell still didn't managed to settle and Veenstra was 4:1 in the lead. He had a chance to win the match in the following set but had to fight both his nerve and a suddenly much improver Scott Mitchell who won set six. The seventh set was a hard fougth one - both players showed a good performance and it was Mitchell who kept his nerve in the fifth deciding leg. But in the next set Veenstra had settled again and hit with his last dart double 20for the win.
