SUPERB WRIGHT ENDS CADBY'S DREAM IN TABTOUCH PERTH DARTS MASTERS

PETER WRIGHT ended Australian hopes at the TABtouch Perth Darts Masters with an astounding 10-2 defeat of Corey Cadby on Friday night, as Michael van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld and Dave Chisnall also enjoyed quarter-final wins at the PCEC.

Tasmania-born Cadby had ended Phil Taylor's reign as two-time Perth Darts Masters champion with a stunning performance in Thursday's first round, and was aiming to continue his emergence by overcoming the world number five on day two of the PDC World Series of Darts event. However, despite producing another fine performance the 21-year-old could only watch on as Wright showed his class in a brilliant display as both players averaged almost 110 in a game of outstanding quality.
Wright - who had switched darts in mid-game against Adam Rowe in round one - set the tone for the contest with a 132 bull finish to win the opening leg and also claimed the next four before the youngster took out 127 to get on the board in leg six. The pair traded 180s in the seventh before Wright responded with a 116 checkout, only for Cadby to then land two maximums and seven perfect darts during an 11-darter to pull back to 6-2. Wright, though, saw a pair of tops finishes sandwich a 91 checkout as he pushed out to 9-2 despite Cadby adding his seventh 180, and the Scot landed two maximums of his own in leg 12 as he sealed a brilliant performance.

"I saw Corey beat Phil last night and knew it was going to be a very difficult game," said Wright, who now meets van Gerwen in the semi-finals for a second successive week after losing out to the Dutchman in the Sydney Darts Masters. "Corey's going to be awesome and he's an entertainer, and I tried to be that tonight too. I was focused despite not feeling my best tonight, and the darts are right for this tournament - I think. I fancy my chances, but Michael relaxed a bit once Phil was knocked out and hasn't been at his best yet - and I won't let him off tomorrow. It's a fantastic crowd and I'm privileged to play here."

Van Gerwen emerged victorious 10-8 in a battle of former Perth finalists with James Wade as the Dutchman came from two legs behind at one stage to claim the win in an entertaining contest.
The world number one hit 180s in each of the first two legs, as well as a 100 finish which included two double tops, as he took a 2-0 lead, only to see Wade - inspired by two maximums, a 130 bull finish and a 97 checkout - claim the next four. Van Gerwen then took four legs of his own to regain the lead, with Wade hitting back to level at six-all before the Dutchman broke in a key 13th leg on tops and landed double nine to open up a two-leg lead. Wade twice landed double ten as he stayed in touch at 9-8, but an eighth 180 from van Gerwen was followed by double four as he secured his semi-final spot.

"James is a tough player to play against but it's all about winning the game and I got the ten legs today," said van Gerwen. "My scoring power wasn't there but I won, and sometimes it's good to win when you're not at your best."

The other semi-final will see Chisnall and van Barneveld clash as they bid to reach their first World Series final of 2016 following their high-quality quarter-final wins.
Chisnall produced a sensational display of finishing, including a 160 checkout and ten doubles from 17 attempts as he claimed his first win in seven meetings against World Champion Gary Anderson. Anderson had responded to early finishes of 72 and 78 from Chisnall by taking out 99 and a 72 of his own as he came from 2-1 down to lead 5-3. Chisnall then hit back with a 70 checkout, and also took out tops twice, 89 on double five and a sublime 160 finish in a five-leg burst to move himself into command at 8-5. Anderson finished another 99 checkout and kept his hopes alive at 9-7 with a 13-darter, but saw his second 180 of the game come in vain in the next as Chisnall hit double two to book his place against van Barneveld.

"When it was 5-4, Gary stepped off a little bit and didn't play as well as he does and I stepped up," admitted Chisnall. "I'm in form and I've just got to keep it up and hopefully I can get through the semi-final. Barney's a very good player and I've played him loads of times, but tomorrow's a different day and hopefully I can beat him."

Van Barneveld, meanwhile, gained revenge for defeats in two successive Auckland Darts Masters events to Adrian Lewis as he finished ten doubles from 15 attempts in a clinical 10-8 triumph.
A see-saw opening saw the Dutchman capitalise on a slow start from his opponent to lead 2-0, only for Lewis to take out 116 as he got off the mark before winning the next three to take charge. A three-leg burst - completed with a 121 bull finish - saw van Barneveld edge 5-4 up, only for Lewis to break back and finish 79 to regain the edge as the lead changed hands for a third time. However, van Barneveld's superior finishing saw him level before taking out 116 and 74 to move two legs clear, with Lewis firing in two 11-darters in reply but unable to break his rival as the Dutchman followed a fourth maximum with double eight to seal the win.

"Normally in Australia I don't do well but I played well and I'm really proud of myself," said van Barneveld. "I changed back to an older set of darts last week and I believe in them, and tonight it was phenomenal. Adrian kept coming back but I kept believing because my scoring was good and my finishing went well, so I'm really happy with this win and I'm really looking forward to the semi-finals."
